Stupid, SLOW Gnome terminal doesn't work for me anyway: All I get is ^? on the 
screen when I press the [BACKSPACE] key, and then I have to go in and change 
the default setting anyway.

So what's the point?

BTW, GNOME terminal is unusable for any serious work: it's so slow that it can 
bring the system to his knees if there is lots and lots of text to output.

Point: it doesn't really matter what works in Gnome terminal. xterm and the 
console are STILL THE LAW.
