totally agreed. Anyway I would expect that JDS designers put some added values to the Gnome Desktop and try integrating some Java desktop applications (aditionally to what Gnome offers) if these are competitive in terms of usability, performance and stability. In the acroread recompile vs. gpdf vs. jpedal discussion in example it would be possible to reuse jpedal code to build an "All Java PDF viewer browser plugin", a standalone viewer, a remote PDF renderer with applet frontend and whatever. Best possible PDF support is imho a key feature to JDS.
