Here I want to describe which pros Menhir will have to OpenSolaris users - especially for future users - :
1) I am frequently reading the mailing list for Indiana: One of _the_ topics there is "How can we make it clear, that OpenSolaris is just and only the source of the 'base-system' ?" I think with my work on Menhir this will be getting crystal clear. Because Menhir calls and distributes OpenSolaris as what it is : the source. And because of that there will be no "name giving", "name finding" and "distribution form finding"(base-cd against live-cd etc.etc.) difficulties. 2) Please, look at this forum/mailing-list opsol-discuss. There are many, many posts with questions coming which show that the people who write these questions learned Linux and don't understand (Open)Solaris. I don't blame these people, please, don't missunderstand this. But somehow we, the community, have to teach these new-users the Solaris skills. This is the most important work if we want that more people will use OpenSolaris. There are many different sides compared-to Linux. These should be made crystal clear, and this knowledge should be distributed. 3) If the OpenSolaris project needs something now then it is "educated" people: Who know the design and architecture and administration and use of OpenSolaris. Because these users can help bring this project to its goals. These users can help other new comers. And the educated people will have a stronger believe in OpenSolaris - because of their skills their work with OpSol will in the most cases successful- so they will make better "evangelists". I think you are aware of the "problem" - to call it so - that the most big news sites don't bring news about this system developed here apart from some trollings of Linux devs against a CEO? I have the strong opinion that the picture of OpSol in the wild out there is not so positive as we wish it be. So, "evangelists" are needed more than you believe. Much more. And only OpSol educated people are good evangelists because they would never write "trolling reviews" about OpSol - and if they would write a bad review then it will be some writing which brings this project further -. I think that Menhir will educate the people in the right manner. Plus it will only "speak" to these kinds of users which OpenSolaris will need at his time: The users who are not afraid of tinkering with the sources. 4) I think a problem to solve also is to show the system/infrastructure/solution builders out there how to get from the sources to complete systems/solutions/infras. We should be honest here: OpSol is meant as a "business building" block - may it be for Sun, may it be for your biz as you now have all the rights to do this-. I think Menhir will solve this problem - at least partially - by concentrating on showing how to get "full functionality" from the sources with the help of pkgsrc.
