As much as we may want to call OpenSolaris UNIX, we cannot. UNIX is a trademark owned by The Open Group.
The UNIX brand is designed to be applied to specific versions of specific products from specific vendors. This is the problem. You cannot brand "OpenSolaris" any more than you could "Linux". A specific version of a specific distribution (from some specific entity who is going to pay for and be liable for it) of either could be branded. The ins and outs of that I'd be happy to get into with people who are interested (in some other thread).
But, does that really matter? The point here was trying to find a way to distinguish Open Solaris from the crowd. The bottom line is we cannot use the word "UNIX" in whatever we choose to say about OpenSolaris.
