You are quite right - some problems are still present and need to be solved before thin clients can become mainstream - like the problem of a portable thin client. Right now, the only feasible replacement is a laptop - a whole transportable PC. Likewise, whole continents either don't have internet access or have unreliable access at best. These are real problems and it would be folly to pretend as if they didn't exist. I predict that in the future, wireless access will be all-permeating, breaking the last barrier to thin clients and finally pushing the last stronghold of PCs out of the picture - the laptop, and solving the reliable access you write of. It might very well be another 10-20 years before that happens, but it will happen.
