Yes.

(2) is correct.  However, you can simplify this _greatly_ by using
Live Upgrade.  Just download the DVD, use lofiadm to mount it up, and
then use Live Upgrade to upgrade the system.  It requires zero
downtime to do the upgrade itself, and only a reboot when you're ready
to switch over to the new version.

There's an application that simplifies the use of LU for those who
don't want to learn the command line utilities.  Use this tool on the
distribution medium:
