Actually sgi was the very first company to prove that a full-blooded, high-performance, enterprise grade System V UNIX can be made into a multimedia, user-friendly 3D desktop. Just look up IRIX 6.5 on the 'Net. If you'd ever used one, you'd know exactly what I mean. Just to give you some idea of how user-friendly and easy IRIX's 4Dwm GUI/Desktop was, OS X is still playing catch-up in that arena... You see, OS X Aqua GUI is mostly braindead for anything more demanding than web browsing or e-mail, while 4Dwm covered everything, from the average Joe User "from e-mail to multimedia", while giving the experienced pro capability to set up high performance, XFS-based XLV/XVM plexes... Strategic error: sgi hardware cost tens of thousands to millons of USD, and ran only on sgi/MIPS proprietary hardware. You paid for a Bugatti Veyron of computers, and you got one, the downside is that sgi is now bankrupt and IRIX discontinued. That's why Apple is peddling a braindead version of the same concepts, this time BSD-based.
