An important part of OpenSolaris is actually helping out and improving things in Solaris. The people at Sun are paid to work on Solaris and told by their management what to work on, after consideration of customer feedback and marketplace pressures. People at OpenSolaris are likely to want to work on thing they need, want or just want to make. They're less likely to make something purely because someone else wants it.
