The best compatibility is probably with a FAT filesystem. If you are willing to reformat the external USB drive, this would do it. You may not be able to coax some Windows systems to do this, but if you boot the System Rescue CD (http://www.sysresccd.org), it has tools to do it. I'd like read-only NTFS support in Solaris, too.
