I know this isn't really an open Solaris issue, but I thought asking here might be the best way to get some attention....
I just initiated an 'lumake -n' and as it did not seem to make any progress, I wondered what it is doing. So I looked and saw that it is executing lucopy. A truss quickly revealed that lucopy is executing tons of read()s, all with a size of one!!! Why does it do that.
