ok, i am officially an idiot.. this can be closed. in my haste, i forgot to flag the script as executable, and was invoking it via sh ./sysrelease.d
after flagging it +x and running it, it performed as planned. the bright side is... dtrace is not busted on this box :) i am a bit new to solaris and dtrace, but the more i learn, the more i like the OS... this coming from a 12-year linux admin.
