For what it's worth, even though the functionality to build interactive packages is available, interactive packages should not exist. Interactivity makes automation difficult and counter-intuitive, as you've experienced. A worthy thing to note, is that a package that has been made strictly according to System V standards, has no need for interaction whatsoever. In fact, a correctly designed package should not be interactive.
