There is another hurdle to cross which you do not mention.  GDM is
currently being rewritten, so the next version (2.22) will use D-Bus as
its IPC mechanism rather than a private sockets protocol.

I suspect that this rewrite will break some features that Sun depends
on (Sun Ray support for example).  So, I think it will be necessary to
invest some more effort in GDM to fix these issues before it can become
a replacement for CDE login.

I think this will mean that it will take a bit longer for GDM to replace
CDE login than just Virtual Terminals going into Nevada.

I'd say that if another login program (such as SLiM) could meet all
CDE login replacement needs, Sun Ray needs, and accessibility needs,
that it would be worth considering using a different program as the
CDE login replacement.

That said, I anticipate that Sun will continue to invest time into GDM.
So, if any other programs are to be considered candidates, they probably
need some love from the OpenSolaris community to get them to a point 
where they would meet all needed requirements.
