This has little to do with OpenSolaris, however, having posted this question on forums.sun.com it was suggested to post the issue here.
Sun T3 (and 61xx) series storage arrays can be upgraded with any Fibre Channel or FATA drive sizes, however they are afflicted by a 2 terabytes total volume limit. This is because their firmware uses a 12 bytes SCSI CDB (Command Descriptor Block) that prevents from addressing more than 2TB. Apparently Sun does not have any plan to fix this problem, at least for T3, T3+, and 61xx (excluding 6140), because it is seen as an enhancement and Sun only release bug fixes for these products. The fix should be quite simple as it is about using a 16 bytes CDB, however, it requires having access to the firmware source code... Although these arrays are End Of Lined by Sun, there is still a second hand market sustained by the very same people who, financed personally, use inexepensive hardware to contribute to projects like OpenSolaris. Please, could you join me in sending a request to Sun to either fix this issue or open the storage array firmware like they did for solaris?
