We use pure-ftpd which is available from Blastwave 
http://www.blastwave.org/packages.php/pureftpd .  We looked at the solaris ftp 
daemon but if you implement chroot, it can't find the /usr/lib directory ... 
(as  awatkins  said) so you have to create a bin directory and loads of other 
directories.
We found pureftpd to be secure, efficient and easy to configure.
But thats my 2cents worth.
