I have a Lenovo T61p with 4GB of ram and I've run the xVM kernel without any problems. I'd suspect your MB or one of your dimms. Or perhaps even a specific issue in the xVM kernel in relation to the hardware you're using. But in general, it should work just fine (there aren't any limits).
