Suspend and resume support is very much dependent on drivers. When suspend-to-RAM was first integrated, the only machine it was supported on was the Ultra 40. Gradually support for suspend-to-RAM is being added to other drivers. If you are having trouble on your system, you might want to check the instructions on this blog post, which explain how to test each driver on your system for correct operation of suspend and resume:
