Yes I known Ian Murdock for its contributions in Debian project. It's for one
of this reason I talk about Debian in this post.
Distribution problematic - What I think:
- Coherence between each package like APT:
But I don't know what is the package tools for Solaris.
- Provide workspaces for maintainer:
Examples: Buid (with cross-compilation), bug trackers ...
- Simplify upstream author life. They create their programs and distribution
package it, check coherence with others, check its security, check its
stability, compile for other platform ... etc (for me, distribution is big
concept !)
Of course, it's important that each project have its own personnality. I think
diversity is a fundamental, we must protect it. In otherside, I think mutual
aid, share idea and solution between projects could be very constructive for
every one.
Linux and Solaris kernels are differents and it's a good thing.
Hurd and kfreebsd are different too but Debian provide the same envelope, the
same distribution tools and centralize the same problematic for all kernels.
Imagine a Debian/Solaris concept:
- All infrastructures and all technologies of Debian could be used: life
cycle, packages, supported architectures, APT, BTS ...etc.
- Solaris kernel supply its own improvements to others too
It woukd be constructive isn't it ?
I'm fench and I know I don't speak english very well for explainning what
think, but I hope you understand me ;-)
Best regards
Salokine
