I read the PPC-discuss mailing list on the opensolaris.org forum from time to
time, and I've read that porting to SONY PlayStation 3 has also been discussed.

Ideally, there would be a port to both IBM bare metal POWER and to the PS3, but
I think that right now PS3 looks like a better bet.

Along that line, has anyone had contact with SONY? The real question is, would
SONY be willing to dish out the hardware specs for the PS3, for an OpenSolaris
port?

>From what I understand the Cell processor in the PS3 is ISA compatible with a
>POWER CPU, so porting to PS3s gets the whole PPC effort a step closer to
>running on POWER processors.

That, and an additional bonus that PS3 hardware is plentyful. It might not be
the cheapest hardware around, but the prices will drop further as time passes.
And the price is within reach today.

Perhaps the most important of all, the OpenSolaris PS3 port wouldn't require a
million dollars.

And, perhaps the Yellowdog Linux can be used to speed up development, by
gleaning the hardware details off of the driver implementations. Perhaps.
