Thanks ux-admin. You have answered all my questions well. I know of rsync, best synchronization software I ever used, must look into Mercurial though. I just wanted to know if the technology in question was worth learning about, I spent a lot of time trying to set up an NIS solution and it's outcome was bleak, didn't want to waste time going down the wrong path. I will find some time to set up Java comms suite again, and learn more about LDAP with SJDS and try my luck with applying it to CIFS server.
