First of all you have to ask yourself what you want to do with Solaris. There are (at least) three different paths to go. 1) Solaris 10 (the one you got). This is the main stable branch and is mainly for stable production services. 2) The development branch aka Solaris Express (SXCE) which is the path to the next Solaris version. This is also very stable and includes all development tools. Download DVD at opensolaris.org 3) OpenSolaris 2008.05 aka Indiana is the "Linux look-a-like" branch which is based on SXCE but has replaced things like the packaging system and also has ZFS as default root fs. This is the most bleeding edge path and has some minor hickups. Download LiveCD at opensolaris.com If you want to evaluate Solaris then I would recommend OpenSolaris 2008.05 (3) in a VirtualBox. Only choose Solaris 10 (1) for production. Solaris can be dualbooted, so carefully read up on those alternatives and be careful not to overwrite any existing data that you want to keep. And remember, Google is your friend. _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list [email protected]
