I have managed to create the first live ZFS boot (off a USB drive) using opensolaris. While Opensolaris live USB drives and CDs do exist, this is offers the full functionality of standard Opensolaris installation, as well as the features of ZFS that are becoming more and more useful. Note that it is a LIVE boot, so unlike a standard install, you can plug the usb drive into whatever port on whatever machine you please. I use 2008.05, but it should work with later versions as well.
