It sounds like you're running into the same problem that everyone else
has.  The problem is the grub loader itself, and it causes a "can't
mount root" panic early in boot.

There are many references to this problem in the archives, but the
short answer is that you need to run:

        /boot/solaris/bin/update_grub

or use installgrub to reinstall the booter using the latest /boot/grub
bits.
