By the way, this here is the crux of your problem: it's not the technology it's 
the process in your organization. It's inadequate and doesn't fit into what's 
actually available in Solaris. Like I wrote before, you're trying to fit square 
pegs into round holes.

What is needed here is process change, at least for Solaris. You need to change 
the process such, that your organization no longer deals with systems in terms 
of slices, but in terms of imaging technology and os images. Then the backup 
policy of backing up and restoring slices becomes completely and totally 
irrelevant.

In short, the process in your organization is deficient.
