That sounds like jargon out of the old "System Interface Guide." I
don't know that anyone uses that term that way. Instead, we usually
call that interface the "DDI" (device driver interface).

The modern uses of "SPI" I've seen are for "Service Provider
Interface," which is usually a reference to a plug-in architecture of
some sort. (The crypto modules conform to an SPI, and are an example
of this usage.)

Marketing.  ;-}

"SunOS" generally refers to the kernel and closely related bits.
"Solaris" refers to the larger set of software delivered along with
it. The split was mostly used as a way to distinguish the old 4.1.x
environment from the then-new SysV one.

None of this really matters, I think, except as ancient history. Just
call it "OpenSolaris" and refer to the consolidations, and that older
part becomes essentially irrelevant (except perhaps for a curious note
on the uname output).

Actually, that stamp is put there by ON build, not by the WOS. :-/
