That may be, but I have been hearing that for the better part of a
decade, so I'll not hold my breath.

The question here is what is "the base operating system".

Again, what is "vendor software"? And I am fairly certain that
everyone who chooses to strip the superfluous cruft out of the bloated
"kitchen sink install" that seems to be the preferred norm for
developers and technical writers, or who chooses to use their own
customized build for security/speed/features/what-have-you, is well
aware that the resulting software is not going to be vendor supported
and is quite capable of supporting it themselves - the OS and hardware
will be, but not the software.
