It is needed in order to make bfu work.
I personally dislike that the feature exists completely undocumented
and that it is only present in the outdated cpio archiver. This is why
I documented it in star and why I make it command line selectable.
As star supports the CLI of many archivers and as star supports all
UNIX archive formats, it does not artificially limit the usability.

This is why I used the term "in theory".....
Nobody really uses /usr/sbin/install on Solaris because this is AT&T
variant that does not do what the OpenSource people introduced in the
eraly 1980s.
The various "install" scripts that come with OSS programs usually do what
people expect ;-)
