Hello, (Originally posted to the user forums, but no reponse there -- http://forums.opensolaris.com/thread.jspa?threadID=865)
I'm experiencing poor 'interactive performance' under heavy system load with OpenSolaris 2008.11 on an dual core CPU. When the system is largly idle the gnome desktop feels fast and snappy, and interaction is very immediate. However, when I start a heavy background process (for instance a maven build of a large Java application), CPU utilization shoots to 100% on both CPU cores (which is good!), but my whole desktop becomes sluggish, even mouse movement becomes erratic. I've tried to 'nice' the maven build but for some reason this does not seem to have any effect. (Note: it's not just maven builds, but any type of heavy load.) A similar load on Ubuntu 8.04 on a dual core CPU does not show the same problem: under heavy system load the gnome desktop keeps on responsing nicely (altough you can ofcourse 'feel' the load of the system). Is there any way to remedy this problem, for instance some way of giving all interactive desktop applications a higher priority (like in windows), or is this some kind of problem with the OpenSolaris kernel process scheduler? Erwin
