Sounds like you turned on the "Mouse Keys" accessibility feature.
Look in the keyboard accessibility preferences panel to turn it off.
(This feature is in the core Xorg & GNOME code, so you could have hit
the exact same issue on any Linux distro if you turned it on there.)
