I'm relatively young against others in this thread so you don't need listen to
me ;-)

I started with Atari as I was kid and then DOS,all Windows and so on.During
this time I started with Linux.I discovered OpenBSD in those times but it
looked too much "geeky" for me :-) Now I'm working with HP-UX,AIX and Solaris
too so I can see some pros and cons.

Preferred OS is OpenBSD for me thanks to its
quality,stability,security,documentation and philosophy based on
technology. There are emulation layers for HP-UX,SunOS,SVR4,Linux and others
http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/man.cgi?query=compat_&sektion=0&manpath=OpenBSD+Current&arch=i386&apropos=1&format=html
Quality of development is unbelievable in comparison with MS,Linux or in some
areas Sun.But this OS is example that it's possible.

Solaris 10 is great in case of longterm support, stability of API,usefullness in
HPC.There are cons with HW support of x86 servers other than Sun

OpenSolaris will be great future for Sun if management will wake-up from their
dream and focus on bugs and marketing of this product. There are big cons in
maintenance of bugs

HP-UX is mature and stable OS designed for big "monsters",but it does its work
good.Cons are price,HW support,SW apps,but who may want it on laptop? ;-D

AIX I don't know so much yet.Maybe it's good for virtualization and some
special apps,but nothing more

tri

Don't know what to say about some managers. They think that if something is for
"free" then it's bad.I don't know where are these stupid ideas from?Maybe from
"voice from above" or something like that?
