Many of LSI's HBA's can be flashed to change their firmware.

I've got a LSI SAS3081E-R, its a PCI-e x8 card which I have in a x16 slot on a 
ASUS M2A-VM, uses the mpt driver as reported above.

I've flashed it with their Initiator/Target (IT) firmware which replaces the 
Integrated Raid (IR) firmware with one that gives you JBOD.  You do have to 
flash using the DOS version of LSI's sasflash, the Linux and Windows version 
can't change the type of firmware, they only let you upgrade, i.e. can flash 
IR->IR, or IT->IT, but not IR->IT.  The DOS version lets you do either of those.
