Lite-ON drives have problems. They e.g. write rotten Subchannel data to CDs that results in backwards counting time on a CD player (you may work around this problem by using "cdrecord -raw96r ..."). Plextor does not make drives anymore since 3 years. I have halfway recent drives from NEC (oldd) and Optiarc (NEC+Sony new) I have few halfway recent drives from HL-DT-ST General background information for Solaris: reporting of DMA residual counts for SCSI over PATAPI again does not work since a while. I cannot speak for SATA as I am missing the needed hardware combination. SCSI over USB currently has massive problems. Odd DMA counts do not work (needed for Audio extraction), timeouts are not honored and several SCSI commands fail with illegal error codes. You need DMA in order to write DVDs but AFAIK, sparc PATA still does not support DMA. See also my other mail on osol-code from Tuesday....
