There is nothing stopping you from moving /usr to a seperate filesytem though, is there?

Last time I tried it got upset when I split the root pool filesystems.

Should work fine. Actually you can even do it via jumpstart profile (no finish script required):

  pool rpool auto 8192 8192 mirror c0t0d0s0 c0t1d0s0
  bootenv installbe bename sol10_u7 dataset /var

There has always been an option to split /var.  /usr is a different story.
