I had exactly the same when I tried six months ago Osol 2008.11 on a Dell Lattitude E4400. I think it was feedback noise from the mike/speakers combination. I wasn't in the room when this happened, so could not stop it immediately; the result was that the two speakers were torn and I had to call Dell for a replacement (which, incidently, came next morning ... ). I dodn't have the guts to try it again, though - it wasn't my laptop... My guess is something related to the a17y setup in the installation. > I am thinking that it is a driver issue.
