I've use MPlayer to playback DVDs and 1080p (i.e. 1920x1080 progressive) video and audio streams all under Solaris/OpenSolaris for about 2-3 years so I can help you know if it is a "Solaris" issue or an MPlayer issue. You can also contact Dennis Clarke whom blogged about his experiences with MPlayer 1.0rc2 and can help you as well as myself (and a few other people): http://www.blastwave.org/dclarke/blog/?q=node/145 Now Totem can do a lot of things, but it mainly is just an interface which relies on its backend engine(s) to do the heavy lifting. A few of us "Solaris developers" or "engineers" have worked with Totem enough to get you through the hurdles. ;o) > > > > 3) I'd like to use MY graphic card, I've > already > > > bought it for about 70-100$ and it is not a > small > > > amount money for me... Going back to the ATI subject, this is something we dealt with over in the XWindows-discussion. I own and have tested many of the ATI Radeon cards under Solaris and OpenSolaris distros. The last ones that gave a bit of 3D support were the Radeon 92xx, 9500, 9600, X550, and X600 cards. Most of us had the Radeon 92xx cards (or the Matrox G cards) to play around with 3D on Solaris x86. About a year ago, I did some heavy testing on the ATI Radeon 4870 (or 4xxx-series) and FirePro cards. We found out that we could get decent 2D under Solaris x86 with these cards and possibly get the HDMI port working. This brings out the subject about the DRI on Solaris not being updated to handle the newer ATI cards for 3D programming (or there were some conflict issues back then). There was also a bit of 'tooth gnashing' to get the latest Xorg drivers into OpenSolaris and support for our 1080p monitors. So, the community has done ALOT with Sun on pushing the envelope to get better video drivers on both SPARC/x86 hardware. The issue now deals with the crossroad of using the ATI open source driver versus focusing on the ATI fglrx driver. The closed source drivers dropped support for anything below the ATI Radeon HD 2xxx cards a few years ago. The ATI open source driver is not ready for full 3D programming and testing on newer ATI hardware. Now there was a ATI 3D driver that came out from Sun China, but we have not updated it for OS 2009.06 or SXCE b117 and higher yet. Not to be long of wind, but you'll be faced with updating your ATI 1650 card sooner than later due to ATI driver support. ATI (and Nvidia) did have a video hardware update program. If you are serious about OpenGL-based 3D and visualization usage under Solaris/OpenSolaris then my honest opinion to you is to invest in Nvidia-based G80+ video card(s) at this time - which have FULL Nvidia/Sun driver support. Phase out your ATI 1650 card for other purposes or for 2D purposes under OpenSolaris/Solaris until later this year (i..e. things may change then). Disclaimer: I support ATI products on OpenSolaris/Solaris. ~ Ken Mays _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list [email protected]
