Yes, that's what I tried, as I noted in my post from 4:15 PM above. I pasted the error message I got into that post.
I just tried it again, this time putting /usr/bin in front of /opt/csw/bin, and got the same result. (The blog entry you gave a link to has a typo: /opt/csw/gnu should be /opt/csw/bin, I imagine.) One of the reasons I want to compile mplayer myself is that the Blastwave IPS repo is apparently not being maintained. But I've installed all my Blastwave software using IPS. I tried to go back to the CSW packages using pkgutil (a newer mplayer is available that way), but things seem to be broken there: gpg can't find libncurses.so.5, even though all the dependencies are supposed to be installed automatically.
