To be honest - no, I did not think of that in this particular case.

Perhaps because I wanted to get into the interactive GRUB menu to test my 
changed menu.lst file and reformatted slice layout. Of course, the final test 
is 
by a full reboot, however hardware POST takes about 2-3 minutes which is a bit 
too much for iterative checking ;)

Maybe I get the fast-reboot idea a bit wrong? Where's the interception point 
for 
reloading kernel - is it part of GRUB or some minimalistic routine started 
after 
GRUB has forwarded the execution to the selected OS image?

The question arises because it is possible to use luactivate and reboot into 
another
kernel (and OS root) quickly.
