A little more: Out of curiosity, I tried setting "dobiosdev=0" as follows:
Edit the grub line for the kernel to add -kdsv (to the failsafe line).
In kmdb, "dobiosdev/W0".  With that, it gets to single-user mode.

So I think this does point at the BIOS-call stuff being broken.
I see (from google) that Dell reserves more/different memory
for the BIOS than some other laptops.  Maybe that's why this
laptop is unhappy with snv_120.

It's been a while since I looked at OS/BIOS interactions, but
doesn't the ACPI data tell the OS what memory is reserved
for the BIOS?  If so, do we obey that?  Or did the BIOS lie?

Hmmm...  the plot thickens...
