A little more: Out of curiosity, I tried setting "dobiosdev=0" as follows: Edit the grub line for the kernel to add -kdsv (to the failsafe line). In kmdb, "dobiosdev/W0". With that, it gets to single-user mode.
So I think this does point at the BIOS-call stuff being broken. I see (from google) that Dell reserves more/different memory for the BIOS than some other laptops. Maybe that's why this laptop is unhappy with snv_120. It's been a while since I looked at OS/BIOS interactions, but doesn't the ACPI data tell the OS what memory is reserved for the BIOS? If so, do we obey that? Or did the BIOS lie?
