You can do that now on the used market, just as you mentioned. I saw a 280R with a pair of 1.2GHz CPUs today for $150. I am dangerously close to deploying an 8-way v40z for my home server right now. Yes it's AMD, but still Sun gear. As for Oracle, this is flat brilliant. My employer is a couple years into the move away from Solaris to AIX. I wonder how long that strategic decision will last. Every Oracle license renewal has now become a lead for Sun, complete with contact names and insight into a company's budget and purchase process.
