This sounds like either GDM is failing to start up, or a problem with the Xserver.
You could turn on debug by editing /usr/share/gdm/defaults.conf and setting "Enable=true" in the "[debug]" section. Then try to restart gdm (log into root and run "gdm" or reboot). After it fails, check the /var/adm/message file, and there should be GDM-related debug messages that should highlight any errors GDM is noticing. Any interesting error messages in your Xorg log file? You can find them in /var/log. They are named Xorg.#.log, where the # is your $DISPLAY number. For the console display, the log would probably be Xorg.0.log. Brian
This is my first posting and attempt to get OpenSolaris working on my Dell R610. The R610 is a dual Nehalem server with 16 GB RAM, Matrox on-board video, 146GB SAS hard drive, and quad GbE ports. The OpenSolaris 2009.06 LiveCD boots without issues, straight to the GUI. I ran the Device Driver check and there were no reported issues; all drivers (including video were installed). The screen resolution defaulted to 1280 x 1024, which is my displays resolution. I proceeded to install OpenSolaris on an entire hard drive. Installation was easy and quick. After installation, I rebooted the server, and OpenSolaris loaded. But, the GUI never appears. The display will flash 3-4 times, and ultimately settle on the console login prompt. I've tried a number of things, like: a) svcs -x (there is no output) b) pfexec svcadm clean gdm (got a message that :gdm:default is not in a maintenance or degraded state) c) svcadm enable gdm (there is no output) d) /usr/bin/X11/X -configure (after a few seconds I got a blank gray screen with an X mouse pointer and the system hangs indefinitely) At this point I thought I would post here my Xorg.0.log file but I cannot manage to get an SSH session to the OpenSolaris server. Putty (my ssh client) reports "Couldn't agree a client-to-server cipher". Any help would be appreciated!
