Sometime ago I encouraged the opensolaris community to consider launching an
apps store to act as a catalyst for application development on the platform
aimed at the small to midsize ISV and developers. Ubantu have also realised the
issues of a proprietory software community on a free opensource platform as the
model of the furure. The news that ubantu has also accepted a similar model
comes as no surprise.

The original proposition to the opensolaris was to charge nothing for the
software but charge a flat rate of one dollar for all downloads for admin costs
etc.Once approved developers would receive 50 cents per download for the first
six months then after the code would be free under opensource license. The whole
aim was to reward the small to midsize developers to produce a wider veriety
innovation of apps on a pro bono approach.Without such critical initiatives
opensource will not compete in the future...perhaps looking at this again
urgently is the way to go?
