Dude, a SPARC Enterprise T5240 is like a $40,000 to $50,000 server, why do you
want to break it so badly? Running it with the cover off will cause the server
to over heat because the air won't flow properly. If you're trying to get
temperature sensor readings, you could probably get them from the remote
management processor that is built in to the motherboard (LOM or ILOM or
whatever it's called now) or you could install SPARC Linux on the server and
try to install the lm_sensors module:

http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/6712

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lm_sensors

and get your temperature readings from that (these temperature readings will be
much more accurate because they use the sensors built in to the motherboard
instead of having you lift up the lid and dangle your own home made junk inside
the chassis which is almost certain to disrupt proper air flow inside the
server).

I think lm_sensors might work on SPARC if you use Gentoo as your Linux
distribution:

http://gentoo-portage.com/sys-apps/lm_sensors

and it probably works in Debian SPARC Linux as well:

http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=lm-sensors

I don't work for Sun and I don't even do more than a couple thousand dollars
worth of business with them (I'm actually a Red Hat customer), but in my
opinion, Sun has every right to void the warranty on your hardware if you're
going to behave this recklessly with it.

What are you going to do next? Throw the SPARC Enterprise T5240 server in your
swimming pool to see if you can use it as a flotation device?

If you've got so much money burning a hole in the bottom of your pocket that
you can afford to just throw away $50,000 servers on a random whim, why don't
you dress up in a Santa Claus outfit and come over to my place and give me a
few of your spare sun4v UltraSPARC T2 servers as a late Christmas present?

;-)
