I would suggest a few specs such as sound card or chipset also you might want to check the HCL as only a few cards support spdif. I use a p35 chipset which is on an Intel dp35dp motherboard and I do not have spdif output either. If you need sound you might have to use analog outputs. That is what I have to do or buy a card that has spdif support. They say that the new X-fi creative cards have it but I haven't seen any followup as most people on Opensolaris do not use spdif. This is kind of a pain as Opensolaris is designed for desktop use and having spdif output makes it nice for those who use multimedia.
