The system boots, GDM starts up, screen goes blank with cursor in top left.
Eventually the entire screen blanks (no sign of cursor), so I have to reboot.
Ctrl/Alt/Backspace makes no difference.
I have booted the system into single user and disabled GDM so I can get at any
logs that may be needed to help resolve.
Back to working in 111b.

Could be, if your system has an Xorg process hanging on the same ioctl
call. You don't really provide enough information to know for sure.
There can be a lot of different problems that cause the login screen
to not display.
If you would like to look into this further and provide more diagnostic
information, the tips I recently provided in this email suggest ways to
get more information about why GDM might be failing:
