My guess is that if you watch top or prstat carefully, you'll see the
gconfd process grow very large and restart rapdily (the pid number
should change).
If you:
* go to System Preferences -> Appearance -> Visual Effects
* set it to None
* then logout and log back in
...you may see an improvement. If that works, try restarting the system
at that point, then logging back in and re-enabling visual effects if
you desire. Once you've done that, you will likely want to logout and
log back in to see if the problem recurs.
