George:
Hi there to all, dear friends! Came to know about OpenSolaris... I installed it, but everything seems to be hard... the sound does not work.. cannot find any new updates... I used OpenSolaris 2009.06
Note that OSS (the Boomer project) will be integrated into the next release of OpenSolaris. OSS has much better sound card support. If sound does not work for you, then this is usually a driver issue. So there is a good chance you will find the next release works better. Here is some information about OSS/Boomer: http://hub.opensolaris.org/bin/view/Project+opensound/ Here is a website which explains how you can update to the latest pre-release of the next version of OpenSolaris if you want to try it out: http://pkg.opensolaris.org/dev/en/index.shtml It might be good to try it out since it might resolve your audio issues. Also, if you like using media, you can get plugins for most non-free media (MPEG2, MP3, WindowsMedia, DVD) from Fluendo: http://www.fluendo.com/
But the reason I`m opening this thread is to ask which are the reasons for using OpenSolaris, and what OpenSolaris offers for a everyday desktop user that Linux or Windows does not offer... I enjoy OpenSolaris... but everything seems to be so difficult for me to do (install programs for example). I really want to know all the benefits it is offering, and if there is a reason to pass all this difficulties...
OpenSolaris does have some unique and exciting features, such as Time Slider and ZFS. Solaris has a long history of being more security focused and stable. Though stability can also be a problem on OpenSolaris if you are using the developer pre-release install, but this is probably to be expected.
