Neither: there just isn't a SMF service for xdm.  This is a known issue:

        6208536 SMF service manifest for xdm should be provided

I've created one myself, based on the cde-login service (not in
OpenSolaris, but in SX:CE up to build 130), which is simpler than gdm
and far closer to xdm (probably of common heritage).

I don't know how far Alan Coopersmith, the responsible engineer for that
CR, is with a putback.  If desired, I could ask for a sponsor for the
service I have.
