You might have answered your question in the same sentence. I'd suggest checking your top, or prstat, to see if you're hogging your cpu with compression, or hogging your ram with dedup. The PowerEdge T410, AFAIK, always has at least a quadcore xeon, right? I don't know if ZFS is able to parallelize all the compression to utilize more than one core. I do know that 4G of ram is pretty low. I never put less than that into a laptop anymore.
