Why are you worried about video codecs? If you use OpenSolaris, you should know how to build applications from source. The last time I tried, MPlayer, the best video player IMO, which comes with all the video codecs you might need, built under OpenSolaris.
(There used to be an IPS repository which had MPlayer and some other multimedia applications -- myunix.org -- but it appears the owner let the domain name expire.)
