I had a similar checksum issue on a now 6 year old laptop a few years ago. It seemed to only happen with larger files, so I suspected a memory problem. Because one DIMM was under the keyboard I did not want to have to access that too many time, and thankfully was quickly able to rule out one DIMM. After replacing it, and also doubling its size, I never had the problem again, even on very large files (DVDs instead of the original CDs) that would use the additional memory.
